A 204 Year Tradition

The tradition of Oktoberfest began as a celebration of the marriage of Crown Prince Ludwig I and Princess Therese of Bavaria in October 1810. Festivities were held in the field in front of the city gates and included a horse race. The horse race was held each year after that, and this annual celebration became the Oktoberfest we know today. This fall event in Gatlinburg has been a Smoky Mountain tradition since the 1980s when the Heidelberg Castle operated its restaurant at Ober.
