Hiking in Gatlinburg and the Great Smoky Mountains is one of the most enjoyable activities visitors to the area can do. With trails ranging from easy to strenuous, it is important to keep safety as a number one priority when enjoying the scenic Smoky Mountain views. That is why we have compiled a list of the top five things visitors should remember to bring when conquering the trails of the Great Smoky Mountain National Park.

Hydration

Though there are plenty of babbling creeks and streams that line the trails, hikers will want to pack their own water to stay hydrated. You may want to bring more than one bottle, or a water bottle big enough to supply a healthy amount of water needed depending on the length of the trail. For the more advanced outdoorsmen and women, there are water filtration systems available to purify the water found in streams. These systems can be purchased at any outdoors center, like the Nantahala Outdoor Center located off the Gatlinburg Parkway.

Nutrition

Hiking in Gatlinburg and the Smoky Mountains takes a lot of energy. To keep energy levels up, it is important for hikers and families to pack a snack for while they are the trail. This is the perfect excuse to pack a picnic, and enjoy the scenic beauty of the forest. While enjoying your picnic or snack, keep an eye out for wildlife like deer, raccoons and turkeys that may stumble onto the trail.

First-Aid Kit

The hiking trails in the Great Smoky Mountains are well maintained year-round, but just in case there is an accident you and your family will want to be ready with a first-aid kit. The kit should include antiseptic spray, bandages, calamine lotion and back-up medications. Also in the first-aid kit, hikers will want to include plenty of sunscreen to protect themselves while being exposed to the sun. Keep in mind even if there is a slight overcast, the rays from the sun can still effect you on the trail.

Camera

The most important thing for families and hikers to remember when hiking in Gatlinburg is to bring a camera. Guests will want to capture the memories of the natural beauty and experiences on the trail. For extra precaution it is advised that travelers use a waterproof case around their camera to protect their precious memories.
