1. Cades Cove totals 6,800 acres.
The valley offers some of the best views of the mountains. It’s also one of the best places in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park to spot wildlife. Visitors to the Loop Road can enjoy various historical sites on the 11 mile road, but you can also hike the trails for a close-up look at the area.
2. The Oliver Cabin was the first cabin at Cades Cove.
Once pioneers began settling into the valley, they began building homesteads. The first of those settlers was the Oliver family, who purchased the land in the 1820’s. The land stayed in the Oliver family until the National park was established in 1934.

3. Cades Cove was known to produce some of the best moonshine during the prohibition.
The Chestnut Flats area near the base of Gregory Bald was known as one of the best places to find high-quality liquor during the dry period. Though you won’t find any moonshine stills, you can still enjoy some historical sites in the area ranging from homesteads to church buildings.
