Forbidden Caverns, one of the many beautiful caves in Gatlinburg

Legend tells of a Native American princess living in what is now East Tennessee, who was lost in a “hollow mountain of two streams”, a dark cavern “which is forbidden”. Today, visitors can explore the mysterious caves that were so feared hundreds of years ago. Located right around the corner from our Pigeon Forge cabins, Forbidden Caverns is a one of a kind attraction located under the Great Smoky Mountains.

Guided Tours

Visitors to Forbidden Caverns tour the cryptic caves beneath the Smokies. The caverns are lined with lights, so guests can see every detail of the cave’s grottos, natural chimneys, and crystal clear streams. Expert tour guides take visitors on an educational and entertaining journey complete with a stereophonic sound presentation and special lighting effects.

History of the Caverns

Before the colonization of Tennessee, Forbidden Caverns was used as shelter by the Eastern Woodland Indians. Native Americans also made use of the cave’s river, which provided a constant supply of water. During the 1920s, 1930s and early 1940s, the caverns were used by moonshiners. With its river and isolated location, Forbidden Caverns was the perfect place to brew homemade whiskey. In 1964, the caverns were purchased by a group of businessmen who excavated and developed the caves for three years before opening them to the public in 1967.

After an exciting day exploring the spectacular caverns under the Smokies, you will be ready to retire to one of our Pigeon Forge cabins.
