If you’re nostalgic for the days of drive-in movies, you will love the new attraction coming to Pigeon Forge, TN! Our Smoky Mountain city will be the home of the very first August Moon Drive-In , a state-of-the-art indoor “drive-in” movie theater. Featuring the largest non-IMAX movie screen in North America and a variety of classic cars for guests to sit in, this awesome theater is already generating a ton of buzz. Timber Tops Cabin Rentals has put together a handy guide to everything we know about the August Moon Drive-In theater.

A Blast from the Past

The idea for the August Moon Drive-In was conceived by Michael Counts, a director, designer, and visual artist from New York. Counts spoke with local news station WBIR about what he envisions for the August Moon project:

“Imagine a perfect summer night at a classic American drive-in movie theater in 1965 – the beautiful sunset, a low full moon over the treeline in a country field, fireflies, a summer breeze, the smell of fresh cut grass, stars overhead, sitting in a convertible surrounded by some of the best examples of the golden era of American auto manufacturing, and, of course, dinner and a movie. That bygone reality is the August Moon Drive-In.”

An Indoor “Drive-In”

Counts plans to bring back the magic of drive-in movies with a little help from the latest technology. As we mentioned earlier in this article, August Moon will be an indoor attraction, which will allow the theater to operate regardless of the weather or time of year.

In order to make an indoor venue feel like an old-fashioned outdoor drive-in, August Moon will be housed in a high-tech domed building with a special ceiling that will display realistic projections of sunsets, the night sky, and the moon. The theater will also set the scene with the sounds of chirping crickets, the gentle rustle of a summer breeze, fifty full-size trees, and a half-acre of grass.

No Need to Bring Your Own Car

Guests at the August Moon Drive-In won’t be watching the movie in their own vehicles. Instead, they will sit in one of the 40 vintage cars parked in front of the enormous screen. Just imagine leaning back in a ‘63 Corvette as you enjoy a James Bond movie or a Paul Newman classic! You can even enjoy a delicious snack or meal while you relax in the cars and watch the movie. August Moon Drive-In will feature a food and beverage service that offers all your classic American favorites, from burgers and fries to bar areas.

August Moon Drive-In Location

The August Moon Drive-In will be located near the corner of Teaster Lane and Wears Valley Road in Pigeon Forge’s new Mountain Mile shopping and entertainment complex. Michael Counts anticipates that the August Moon Drive-In in Pigeon Forge will open in late 2019 or early 2020. It plans to have an initial schedule of 18 showings a week. The August Moon drive-in will be followed by a second location in East Nashville.
